  109.         applications, only to find that you get lost searching for that one
  110.         application you need?  Or have you ever found yourself wanting to
  111.         quickly start an application from within the application you are
  112.         using?  Well, New Generation Software Ltd. has the solution for you!
  113.         WinEZ provides one of the easiest ways to switch between and start
  114.         applications under Windows.

  116.         Once WinEZ is installed and running, it places two new icons on the
  117.         title bar of the active application.  The left icon or "Fast Path
  118.         Icon" allows you to quickly start any application in the Windows'
  119.         Program Manager, or be configured to jump directly to the Program
  120.         Manager (or any add-in Windows' shell you define).  The right icon
  121.         or "Task Switch Icon" provides you with a list of all active
  122.         applications.  Similar to the Windows' Task List, WinEZ goes one
  123.         step better and provides task switching without having to use the
  124.         CTRL-ESC or click on the background.

  126.         WinEZ also provides an enhanced Run facility that offers you an
  127.         easy way to navigate through directories and start applications.

  165.         We at New Generation Software are continually improving WinEZ to
  166.         meet the needs of our users.  Version 3 incorporates many of the
  167.         suggestions we have received.  Below is a list of new features we

  171.         1. Norton Support!  The "Power Menu" will now support both Program
  172.            Manger groups (.GRP files) and Norton Desktop groups (.QAG
  173.            files).

  175.         2. The Fast Path icon (left) can now be configured to:

  177.            (a) Display a pull down "Power Menu" consisting of your Program
  178.                Manager (or Norton Desktop) groups.  Each group then further
  179.                expands into the applications under it.

  220.         WinEZ attaches 2 icons to the title bar, a Task Switch icon and
  221.         Fast Path icon.  These icons provide a user with one of the fastest
  222.         ways to switch between and start applications under Windows.

  225.         The "Task Switch Icon" (right icon):
  226.  
  227.            - Quickly switch to ANY active application
  228.  
  229.              There is no need to hunt down that one particular window or
  230.              CTRL-ESC to the Task Manager.  From the current application,
  231.              WinEZ's provides a pull down menu of all active applications.
  232.  
  233.            - Start a new application from WinEZ's Run dialog.
  234.  
  235.              WinEZ's enhanced Run facility allows a user to start new
  236.              applications (DOS or Windows) without having to start the
  237.              Windows' File Manager.  This dialog allows a user to select a
  238.              file (program or batch file) to be executed in a manner
  239.              similar to an open file dialog.  Filters are available to
  240.              display only certain types of file extensions (EXE, COM, BAT,
  241.              PIF) for easy pickings.  You may even enter the name of the
  242.              program directly.

  244.              Best of all, WinEZ's Run facility remembers the last 5
  245.              programs executed.  Select the drop down the list box
  246.              (ComboBox) and choose a program from the list presented.

  248.         The "Fast Path Icon" (left icon):
  249.  
  250.         - Allows a user to start another application without ever leaving
  251.           the current application they are using.  It may be configured 2
  252.           ways:
  253.  
  254.           1. WinEZ's "Power Menu"
  255.  
  256.              With WinEZ's Power Menu, you can start any application that
  257.              you've defined in the groups of the Program Manager (or
  258.              Norton's Desktop for Windows).  The Power Menu is a drop down
  259.              menu which displays a list of all the group items of the
  260.              Program Manager.  Each group item has a submenu that contains
  261.              all of the applications in that group.  So instead of leaving
  262.              your current application to activate the Program Manager, just
  263.              bring up the Power Menu and "viola!", your group applications
  264.              are just a click away.

  275.           2. Switch directly to the Program Manager or any add-in
  276.              Windows shell.

  278.              WinEZ's Fast Path Icon may also be configured to allow a user
  279.              to jump directly to any active application.  By default, WinEZ
  280.              will jump directly to the Program Manager, however it may be
  281.              configured to activate any add-in Windows shell.  (See
  282.              "Setting WinEZ's Options").

  284.           3. By pressing the right mouse button over this icon, you can
  285.              jump directly to the Program Manager (or any add-in shell
  286.              specified in the Options menu) when in Power Menu mode.

  332.         INSTALLING AND GETTING STARTED

  335.         WinEZ is easy to install.  First, you will need to unzip the
  336.         WINEZ.ZIP file into a subdirectory (i.e.  C:\WINDOWS).  You will
  337.         need an unzipping utility, like PKUNZIP, to do this.
  338.  
  339.         Once unzipped, you have two choices to get WinEZ up and running.
  340.  
  341.         1. To allow WinEZ to run automatically every time you start
  342.            Windows, you will need to modify the WIN.INI file found in the
  343.            Windows subdirectory.  By editing the line containing the LOAD
  344.            keyword, append the program name WINEZ.EXE.
  345.  
  346.            For example:  LOAD=C:\WINDOWS\WINEZ.EXE
  347.  
  348.            The next time you start Windows, WinEZ will be started for you
  349.            automatically.
  350.  
  351.         2. If you wish to start WinEZ manually, it would be best to install
  352.            WinEZ into a group menu of the Program Manager.  Choose 'New'
  353.            off the 'File' Menu of the Program Manager (Refer to the
  354.            Windows' documentation on how to install programs within a
  355.            Group of the Program Manager).

  392.         WinEZ is a shareware product and is available to you, free, for an
  393.         evaluation period of thirty days.  If you like what you see and
  394.         feel that it will be useful, you are encouraged to register with
  395.         us.  The base registration fee is $29.95.

  397.         NOTE: For registered users of previous version.  You will not be
  398.         required to re-register.  The registration number from the previous
  399.         versions will work with this latest version.

  401.         So what does that give you?  Well, by registering WinEZ you will:

  404.           About box that appears every time you start WinEZ.

  406.         * Encourages NGS to continue producing new high quality Windows

  449.         WHAT YOU SEE...
  450.  
  451.         Once WinEZ is up and running, you will notice two new icons that
  452.         have attached themselves next to the system menu icon on the title
  453.         bar of the active window.  With WinEZ running, most windows that
  454.         become the active application will contain these icons.
  455.  
  456.         The Fast Path Icon (left icon) may be configured to bring up the
  457.         Power Menu, or switch directly to the Program Manager (or any
  458.         add-in shell).  The Power Menu presents the user with a pull down
  459.         menu of all Program Manager groups.  Each group then further
  460.         expands into a submenu of the applications under it.  By default,
  461.         the Fast Path Icon displays the Power Menu.

  463.         The right icon represents the Task Switch Icon which presents the
  464.         user with a menu of all the active applications currently running.
  465.         This provides a user with a quick and easy way to jump directly to
  466.         another active application without having to hunt for it.

  469.         USING THE FAST PATH ICON
  470.         ------------------------
  471.  
  472.         As mentioned earlier, the Fast Path Icon is configured for the
  473.         Power Menu by default.  This icon can be used to quickly start
  474.         applications since it provides a list of all Program Manager groups
  475.         and their applications.  To select an item, press and hold the
  476.         mouse button 1 over the icon until the menu appears.  Drag the
  477.         pointer over the group item in the menu, a submenu will appear,
  478.         displaying the applications within that group.  Drag the mouse
  479.         pointer over the application item then release it.  The application
  480.         will be executed.  If the Fast Path Icon is configured to jump to
  481.         an active application (i.e.  Program Manager), then just click on
  482.         it with the mouse and immediately the application defined will be
  483.         activated (i.e.  the Program Manager in this case).  To change the
  484.         Fast Path application, select the Options...  item from within the
  485.         Active Applications Icon.  Next, specify the name of any
  486.         application that is active.  This icon should be used only for
  487.         applications that are running.  If the application is not running,
  488.         clicking on this icon will sound a beep.  See "Setting WinEZ's
  489.         Options" for more details on configuring the Fast Path Icon.

  503.         USING THE TASK SWITCH ICON
  504.         --------------------------

  506.         As stated previously, the Task Switch icon allows a user to quickly
  507.         switch between applications.  To switch to another active
  508.         application, position the mouse pointer over the Task Switch Icon.
  509.         Click and hold mouse button 1. A pull down menu of the active
  510.         applications will be displayed.  Drag the mouse pointer over the
  511.         application that you would like to activate, and release the
  512.         button.  The application selected will now be active.
  513.  
  514.         The Task Switch Icon also presents the user with the other features
  515.         of WinEZ.  Along with the active applications, other items in the
  516.         menu are:
  517.  
  518.              End Task   This item further expands into a submenu of active
  519.                         tasks.  It provides the user with a fast and easy
  520.                         way to end other active applications.  Select an
  521.                         item from the list and WinEZ will end the program.
  522.  
  523.              Run...      This item is the enhanced Run facility that brings
  524.                          up a dialog box allowing you to enter an
  525.                          application to execute or select an application
  526.                          from a list box.
  527.  
  528.              Options...  This item displays a dialog box that allows you to
  529.                          configure WinEZ.  This includes the action
  530.                          performed by the Fast Path Icon and the behavior
  531.                          of the windows when switching between applications
  532.                          (See "Setting WinEZ's Options" section for more
  533.                          details).

  535.              About...    This item brings up WinEZ's About Box dialog.
  536.  
  537.              Exit        This item will end WinEZ and remove it from
  538.                          memory.

  540.                          Note:  This Exit selection item will be
  541.                          unavailable (grayed out) on non standard windows

  563.         When selected from the Task Switch Icon menu ("Run..."), a dialog
  564.         box will appear that will allow a user to start applications not
  565.         defined by a Program Manager Group.
  566.  
  567.         Included in this dialog is a listbox that contains files found in
  568.         the current directory.  This dialog is similar to an Open File
  569.         dialog found in many Windows applications.  A user may change
  570.         directories or drives by selecting the appropriate items in the
  571.         directories listbox.
  572.  
  573.         A filter is available to allow certain file types to be included in
  574.         the listbox.  Current filters include:  EXE, COM, PIF, BAT, and ALL
  575.         files.  These can be used to quickly locate the file that needs to
  576.         be executed.  An additional feature of the Run dialog is its
  577.         ability to keep the last 5 commands executed.

  617.         SETTING WINEZ'S OPTIONS

  620.         WinEZ may be configured by selecting the Options...  item from the
  621.         menu under the Task Switch Icon.  This is where the switching
  622.         behavior can be set and the Fast Path Icon actions can be
  623.         configured.

  625.         Switching Behavior:
  626.  
  627.              When using WinEZ to switch between applications, WinEZ will
  628.              attempt to return the application back to the state it was
  629.              found (if all switching was done via WinEZ).  WinEZ may also
  630.              be configured to always minimize applications when switching
  631.              to other applications.  Choose the switching behavior by
  632.              selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  633.              preferred option.

  636.  
  637.                WinEZ will attempt to return the application back to the
  638.                state it was found (if all switching was done via WinEZ)
  639.  
  640.              - Always Minimize on Switch
  641.  
  642.                WinEZ will always minimize the application before switching
  643.                to another.

  645.                Note:  WinEZ will only minimize windows that support being
  646.                       minimized.

  674.         Fast Path Icon Action:
  675.  
  676.              The Fast Path Icon can be configured to perform one of two
  677.              functions.  The icon may be configured for WinEZ's Power Menu,
  678.              or to switch a user directly to the Program Manager (or any
  679.              specified active application).  These two options are
  680.              available for your selection.  Choose the Fast Path function
  681.              by selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  682.              preferred option.

  686.                If this option is chosen, then the Power Menu will be
  687.                displayed when you click on the Fast Path Icon (See "Using
  688.                the Fast Path Icon" on how to use the Power Menu).
  689.  
  690.                Selecting "Always Rebuild on Startup" will cause WinEZ
  691.                to rebuild the Power Menu when it is inovke.  If this option
  692.                is not set, a user may have to select "Rebuild Power Menu"
  693.                to get the most current groups listed in the Power Menu
  694.                pull down.
  695.  
  696.              - Title of Window
  697.  
  698.                If this option is chosen, then the application specified in
  699.                the entry field will be activated when the Fast Path Icon is
  700.                pressed.  To specify the application you wish to switch to,
  701.                enter the text found in the title bar of that application.

  703.         WinEZ Icon Position

  705.              The WinEZ icons may be positioned anywhere on the title bar.

  707.              o Left - will left justify the WinEZ icons.
  708.              o Right - will right justify the WinEZ icons.

  731.         USING WINEZ WITH NORTON DESKTOP

  734.         WinEZ will automatically detect if you have the Norton Desktop
  735.         loaded as your shell when using Windows.  WinEZ will search the
  736.         "Shell=" line in the SYSTEM.INI file for the character string
  737.         "NDW.EXE"
  738.  
  739.              Shell=C:\NORTON\NDW.EXE
  740.  
  741.         All Norton Groups and Sub-groups will be listed on the WinEZ Power
  742.         Menu.  Sub-groups are not nested.
  743.  
  744.         NOTE:  All group and subgroup file names MUST end in the .QAG
  745.                extension.  This is done automatically by Norton if
  746.                when creating a group no extension is specified.
  747.  
  748.         If you have a Group named "Norton Desktop" (which Norton will
  749.         create on installation) we recommend you rename it to something
  750.         else (i.e.  "Norton Utilities").  This will prevent WinEZ from
  751.         getting confused with the application "Norton Desktop" and the
  752.         group file "Norton Desktop".

  754.         When selecting "Rebuild Power Menu," WinEZ will automatically
  755.         save your Norton configuration.  This is necessary in order
  756.         to perform the rebuild of the menus.

  792.         - WinEZ creates two files during execution.  These files will be
  793.           placed in your Windows subdirectory.

  795.           WINEZ.INI    File created by WinEZ to save its option settings.
  796.           WINEZ.DAT    File created by WinEZ that contains data from the
  797.                        Program Manager for the Power Menu.  This file
  798.                        should not be edited.

  846.         WinEZ is copyrighted and has been released for distribution as
  847.         SHAREWARE.  Please note that a great deal of effort and time has
  848.         been invested in the development of this program.  You are granted
  849.         a license to try WinEZ for a reasonable trial period without risk.
  850.         If, after this time, you find this program useful and intend to use
  851.         it, you are expected to register.  The base registration fee is
  852.         $29.95.

  854.         You will find a registration form at the end of this user's manual
  855.         that outlines the procedures for registering your copy of the
  856.         program.  Please keep in mind that NGS must have a registration
  857.         form on file for you before any product support can be offered.

  904.         WinEZ.  No one may use WinEZ as a promotion for any commercial

  927.            these added files must be easily identifiable and end-users must
